Newborn Care

Welcoming a new baby is an exciting time, and it often comes with many questions. At Sunshine Pediatrics, we are here to support your family from your baby's very first days and help you feel confident as you navigate the newborn stage.

Our newborn care focuses on your baby's growth, feeding, development, and overall health while giving parents plenty of opportunity to ask questions and discuss concerns.

Your Baby's First Pediatric Visit

Your baby's first visit after leaving the hospital is an important opportunity to make sure your newborn is adjusting well at home.

During the visit, your pediatrician may:

  • Review your baby's birth and hospital history

  • Check weight, length, and head circumference

  • Perform a complete physical examination

  • Evaluate feeding and hydration

  • Monitor for jaundice

  • Review newborn screening information

  • Discuss sleep and safe sleep practices

  • Review recommended immunizations

  • Answer questions about caring for your newborn

We also take time to listen to parents' concerns. No question is too small when you're caring for a new baby.

Feeding and Weight Gain

Feeding is one of the most common concerns during the first weeks of life.

Whether your baby is breastfed, formula-fed, or receives a combination of both, we monitor growth and weight gain and discuss how feeding is progressing.

Parents can also ask questions about feeding frequency, amounts, burping, spit-up, and other common feeding concerns.

Newborn Jaundice

Mild jaundice is common in newborns, but some babies require closer monitoring.

During your baby's early visits, we evaluate for signs of jaundice and determine whether additional testing or follow-up may be appropriate.

Growth and Development

Babies change quickly during their first weeks and months.

Regular newborn and infant visits allow us to monitor your baby's:

  • Weight and growth

  • Feeding

  • Physical development

  • Developmental milestones

  • Sleep

  • Overall health

These visits also provide an opportunity to identify concerns early and discuss them with your family.

Guidance for New Parents

Having a newborn can bring questions that you may never have thought about before.

We can help guide you through common newborn topics such as:

  • Breastfeeding and formula feeding

  • Umbilical cord care

  • Diapering and bowel movements

  • Bathing and skin care

  • Safe sleep

  • Tummy time

  • Crying and soothing

  • Car-seat safety

  • When to call the pediatrician

Our goal is to provide practical guidance while helping parents feel comfortable and supported.

When Should My Newborn See a Pediatrician?

Your hospital or pediatrician will recommend when your baby should have the first visit after discharge. Newborns generally need to be seen soon after leaving the hospital, with additional visits scheduled based on the baby's age and individual needs.

If you have recently delivered and do not yet have a pediatrician for your baby, please contact our office so we can help determine when your newborn should be seen.
