When Should I Consider an ADHD Evaluation?

Every child can occasionally have difficulty paying attention, sitting still, following instructions, or completing tasks. However, when these behaviors are persistent and begin interfering with school, relationships, or everyday activities, further evaluation may be helpful.

Parents may consider discussing an ADHD evaluation if their child frequently experiences concerns such as:

  • Difficulty paying attention or staying focused

  • Easily becoming distracted

  • Difficulty completing assignments or tasks

  • Frequently losing or forgetting things

  • Difficulty following instructions

  • Excessive activity or restlessness

  • Difficulty remaining seated when expected

  • Acting or speaking without thinking

  • Frequently interrupting others

  • Difficulty with organization and time management

  • Declining or inconsistent school performance

  • Similar concerns reported by teachers

These symptoms do not automatically mean that a child has ADHD. An appropriate evaluation helps determine what may be contributing to the child's difficulties.

What Does an ADHD Evaluation Involve?

There is no single blood test or simple office test that can diagnose ADHD.

An ADHD evaluation generally involves gathering information about your child's behavior and functioning in different settings.

Depending on your child's individual situation, the evaluation may include:

  • Detailed medical and developmental history

  • Discussion of symptoms with the parent or caregiver

  • Review of school performance and academic concerns

  • Information from teachers when appropriate

  • Standardized ADHD questionnaires or rating scales

  • Review of behavior at home and school

  • Physical examination when appropriate

  • Evaluation for other conditions that may cause similar symptoms

Because ADHD symptoms should be considered across more than one setting, information from both parents and teachers can be particularly helpful.

Could Something Else Be Causing the Symptoms?

Difficulty concentrating does not always mean ADHD.

Other factors can sometimes cause or contribute to attention, behavior, or school-performance problems, including:

  • Sleep problems

  • Anxiety

  • Learning difficulties

  • Vision or hearing problems

  • Emotional or behavioral concerns

  • Other medical or developmental conditions

Part of an appropriate ADHD evaluation is considering whether another issue may better explain or contribute to your child's symptoms.

What Happens If My Child Is Diagnosed With ADHD?

If your child is diagnosed with ADHD, we will discuss treatment options and develop an individualized plan based on your child's age, symptoms, needs, and circumstances.

Management may involve a combination of:

  • Behavioral strategies

  • Parent guidance

  • School support and accommodations

  • Lifestyle and routine changes

  • Medication when appropriate

  • Ongoing monitoring and follow-up

Treatment is not necessarily the same for every child.

Our goal is to help your child function successfully at home, at school, and in everyday life.

Ongoing ADHD Management

ADHD care doesn't necessarily end with the initial evaluation.

Children being treated for ADHD may benefit from regular follow-up visits to evaluate symptoms, school performance, behavior, medication effectiveness when applicable, and possible side effects.

As your child grows and circumstances change, the treatment plan can be adjusted when appropriate.

What Should I Bring to the Appointment?

If you're scheduling an ADHD evaluation, helpful information may include:

  • Recent report cards or progress reports

  • Teacher comments or concerns

  • Previous psychological or educational evaluations

  • Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan, if applicable

  • Current medication list

  • Relevant medical records

  • Information about your child's sleep and daily routine
