Sports Physicals

Is your child getting ready for a new sports season?

At Sunshine Pediatrics, we provide sports physicals for children and adolescents participating in school, recreational, and competitive sports. A sports physical helps determine whether your child can safely participate in physical activity and identifies health concerns that may need additional evaluation.

What Is a Sports Physical?

A sports physical, also known as a pre-participation physical evaluation (PPE), reviews your child's overall health and medical history with particular attention to issues that could affect safe participation in sports.

During the visit, your pediatrician may review:

  • Medical and family history

  • Previous injuries or concussions

  • Heart-related symptoms and family cardiac history

  • Breathing problems or asthma

  • Current medications

  • Musculoskeletal health

  • Blood pressure and vital signs

  • Overall physical health

A physical examination is also performed to evaluate your child's readiness for sports participation.

What Should I Bring?

To help make the visit go smoothly, please bring:

  • Your child's sports physical form or school form, if one is required

  • Current medication information

  • Relevant medical or specialist records

  • Glasses or contact lenses, if your child uses them

  • Information about previous injuries, surgeries, or concussions

Please complete the parent or athlete portion of any required form before your appointment whenever possible.

Sports Physical vs. Annual Well-Child Visit

A sports physical focuses primarily on whether your child can safely participate in athletics.

A well-child visit is more comprehensive and includes preventive healthcare appropriate for your child's age, such as growth and development, immunizations, screenings, nutrition, behavioral health, and other preventive concerns.

If your child is due for an annual well-child visit, ask our office whether the sports participation evaluation and required forms can be addressed as part of that visit when appropriate.

Sports Physicals for Young Athletes

Sports physicals may be needed for participation in activities such as:

  • Football

  • Soccer

  • Basketball

  • Baseball and softball

  • Volleyball

  • Track and field

  • Cross country

  • Tennis

  • Swimming

  • Cheerleading

  • Dance

  • Martial arts

  • Other school and recreational sports

Requirements vary by school, league, and athletic organization, so check with your child's organization to determine which forms are required.

Does Your Child Have Asthma or Another Medical Condition?

Having asthma, allergies, a previous injury, or another medical condition does not necessarily prevent a child from participating in sports.

The sports physical gives you and your pediatrician an opportunity to discuss these conditions and determine whether additional precautions, treatment, or evaluation may be appropriate before participation.

Don't Wait Until the Day Before Tryouts

Sports physical appointments can become especially popular before the beginning of a new school year and sports seasons.

If your child's school or athletic organization requires a physical, we recommend scheduling ahead of the deadline and bringing the required forms to the appointment.
